Spiderman says, “With great power, comes great responsibilities”
Spiderman says, “with great power, comes great responsibilities”. To be honest, I don’t know what power I have exactly to warrant any responsibilities, but at some point in life, people just completely flipped the switch on me, going from treating me as someone unnoticed, distrusted, never center of attention, to suddenly the weight of the entire sequence of films is on me, and me alone, at least that’s what my producers told me to get me overworked and underpaid.
I couldn’t drink until I was 21, except of course I did. I could drive past 16, but I still don’t have a license. Age is arbitrary, experiences don't accumulate, there’s no sense of direction unless you set a goal, could be any goal, as long as you say you are gonna do it, and you continue to do it, people treat you like an adult. You have fulfilled your responsibilities, that came with the power to shit, eat, smoke, have sex, not have sex, eat meat, not eat meat, have pets, or not have pets, have kids, or no kids. What exactly am I trading my childhood for?
You will understand when you grow up, they said. You will be able to do that when you are an adult, they said. I’m all grown-up, except I still don’t understand, and there are many things I can’t help with. I feel the same, people treat me differently. This whole time I thought I could just explain, I actually had to prove. I can prove anything, but if I had to prove it for you to believe in me, what’s the point? I will sit here, create something out of nothing, is that enough proof for you?
Spiderman says, “with great power, comes great responsibilities”. That’s about as American as you can possibly get as far as movie lines go. We have this power, we think. We have this previlege, we think. We are the largest developed country, California alone would be the 5th or 8th largest economy in the world, I can’t remember the details, probably 8th, yes that sounds more reasonable.
With great power, comes great responsibilities. Responsibilities to who? Power in relation to what? Resources as in what kind? In military power, technology, commerce, academia, research, education? The power to invade, replace, trade, teach, search, experiment, and communicate? The power to revolt, to influence, to pull the rug from under, to change the outlook of the literal planet earth, or of the intangible mental space, or of the metaphorical geopolitical sphere. The power to assist, dissolve, revenge, attack, protect, that much power, is that power that needs to be exercised, or better left dormant? How do you know, what you are doing is right, those responsibilities are your responsibilities? I’m not so sure.
